Save Me Doctor Atkins!

Jeff Stone December 2009350 . . . that’s the magic number. That number describes both my weight and my blood sugar levels. For anyone “in the know” you’ll realize that I’m not exactly what you would call “Healthy.” The picture to the right, taken Christmas day 2009, tells the story.

By the way, in case you’re wondering, that’s Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in my pocket, but I digress. I’m going to assume that you all know that 350 pounds is too heavy even for a big-boned, six foot guy like myself. It’s my blood sugar or glucose levels, however, that may be a mystery to some of you reading this. Good blood sugar should range from 80 to 120.

Those are good numbers to know because they also represent a good blood pressure – 120 over 80, but I digress . . . again. My blood sugar is over 350.

So why am I fat and full of sugar? Am I a victim of society? Was I born with some sort of disorder? Is my metabolism slow? NO! NO! NO! I’m fat because I eat too much! Period! I eat the wrong kind of food, and I eat way too much of it. I don’t exercise, and I’m lazy. The only thing I’m a victim of is my own stupid choices. Well I’m tired of the choices I’ve been making. I’m 37 as of this blog post. I have 4 children and a wife to take care of. So I say it’s about time I took my health seriously. What do you think?

So here’s the deal . . . I’m making a lifestyle change, and I’m going to publish it to the world on this blog, every single day of my life. This will be the most personal thing I’ve ever allowed the public to view. My hope for this blog is three-fold:

  1. To Hold Myself Accountable to My Readers – It’s hard to eat a Twinkie when I know I’ll be telling the whole world about it.
  2. To Inspire Other People to Get Healthy – Maybe seeing a fat guy bare his soul and get skinny will motivate someone else.
  3. To Prove That The Atkins Diet is a Healthy Way to Live – Oh man, I can hear the controversy starting right now.

That’s it. So please follow me on what will likely be an emotional journey as I record my daily activities. I will be recording the following items daily:

  • Blood Sugar Levels
  • Morning Weight in – nothing like starting the day naked on a bathroom scale
  • Blood Pressure
  • Carb Intake
  • What I ate – I’ll be sure to record everything including the occasional inadvertent inhaling of a house fly
  • My Emotions – Trust me, there will be plenty of battles of the will as I stare down the opposing Chocodile
  • Exercise – Let’s hope there’s something to report

My final words, may stir up some controversy, so hang on . . .

I will be doing the controversial Atkins diet. Yes. I’ve done this diet before, and I’ve always had success, but I always chose to go back to my old ways. However, when I did stick with the Atkins Diet, I lost weight and I got my chemistry under control:

  • Normal Kidney Function
  • Normal Liver Function
  • Normal Blood Sugar
  • Normal Cholesterol
  • etc., etc., etc.

There are many misconceptions with the Atkins Diet. I’ll address the majority of them in other posts one of these days. However, I would like to put an end to one major one. Most people think that doing the Atkins Diet means that you only eat meat. Nothing could be further from the truth. You clearly have NOT read his book if you think that. In fact you can actually be a vegetarian and still successfully do the Atkins Diet. It’s all about one mission, one goal:

Find your personal carbohydrate balance.

Each of us have a number of carbs (it’s different for everyone) that if we stay below, we maintain or lose weight, and if we go above, we gain weight. The Atkins Diet helps you find that number through a four phase plan. In short, the Atkins diet seems to cure diabetes naturally. I’m obviously in no position to make such a bold claim, and I’m not a doctor. Also, I’m not affiliated with the Atkins company or anything like that. I simply have used the diet/lifestyle and know that it works. It’s simple:

  • Eat Healthy
  • Exercise
  • The End

Alright. Enough of the controversy. It all begins Monday January 11, 2010 . I look forward to seeing you all there. I hope to see all walks of life:

  • Fat People
  • Skinny People
  • Formerly Fat People
  • Formerly Skinny People
  • Atkins Haters
  • Atkins Lovers

I hope I don’t see any cows, because they’ll be ticked off that I’m eating their relatives – A Lot!

    @ Tammy Mayo:
Hey there! I had no idea you had a stroke! Crap sister. Tell Randy to smack you. By the way, on the sugar alcohol thing, it’s not near as bad for you as regular sugar. The problem, however, is that too much sugar alcohol means waaaaaaaaaay too much intimate time with the porcelain.

Yeah I know the feeling… Sometimes it bothers me and sometimes it doesn’t. Guess it just depends on how much you take in. My doctor suggested that I stay away from the alcohol sugar and just have a (VERY) occasional piece of candy…Meaning 1 or 2 times a week using it as a reward for a lb. lost. O.K….. Lot’s to do, gotta run. Talk soon~~~~ Have a great day and say hello to Tiffany and the kids
